Replacing a Swing with Classe 100: Installer's Guide

Sustituir un Swing por Classe 100: guía para instaladores

The Tegui Swing monitor was for years one of the most installed terminals in Spanish homes with 2-wire BUS systems. Today, with the Swing out of production and no spare parts available, replacement with a Classe 100 is the most common upgrade installers perform on the existing stock.

The good news: the 2-wire BUS wiring does not change. The same two wires that powered the Swing serve the Classe 100. The bad news: if the new monitor is not configured correctly, the system will not work even if everything is properly connected. This guide explains exactly what to do and in what order.

What to keep from the existing installation

Before dismantling the Swing, take an inventory of what you have. In most cases, these elements are kept intact:

✅ What is always kept

  • The 2-wire BUS wiring: the pair of wires that reaches the Swing is exactly the same as the Classe 100 needs. No new cable is required.
  • The outdoor panel: unless it is damaged or incompatible (see below), the existing Tegui/BTicino outdoor panel is compatible with the Classe 100. It is not necessary to replace it to change the monitor.
  • The BUS power supply: if the power supply is in good condition and has enough capacity, keep it. The Classe 100 with video consumes slightly more than an audio Swing, so check the total load if there are multiple monitors in the installation.
  • The floor splitters (if any): they are transparent to the protocol and do not require modification.

⚠️ What may need updating

  • The power supply: if the Swing was audio-only and a Classe 100 with video is installed, the consumption increases. If the existing power supply is old or at its limit, replace it with a 2-Wire Power Supply with Video Adapter BTicino 346050 (€155.10), specifically designed for installations with Classe 100.
  • The frame or flush-mount box: the Classe 100 has different dimensions than the Swing. In most cases, the existing opening is sufficient, but you may need a Monitor Trim Frame Series 8 and Classe 100 Tegui 374025 (€8.00) for a clean finish if the opening is slightly larger.
  • The outdoor panel: if the panel is very old (before 2000) or from a range not compatible with the current BUS protocol, it may need to be replaced. The Audio/Video RFID Panel Linea 3000 Black 2 wires (BTicino 343093) (€316.85) is the current high-end reference for these upgrades.

❌ What is not reused

  • The Swing configurators: the Classe 100 uses its own address configuration system. Note the address the Swing had before disassembling it and reprogram it on the new monitor.
  • The Swing surface box (if there was one): the dimensions are not compatible with the Classe 100.

N/P/M configuration: the critical step

The N/P/M configuration is the aspect that causes the most confusion when replacing a Swing with a Classe 100, and the cause of 80% of the issues reported to technical support after an apparently correct replacement.

What do N, P, and M mean?

  • N (Floor number / home address): identifies which home the monitor belongs to within the building. It must match the address programmed on the outdoor panel for that floor. If there is an error here, the call will not reach the monitor or will reach the wrong floor.
  • P (Position / sub-address within the home): identifies which monitor it is within the same home when there are several. The main monitor is P=0, the second P=1, the third P=2, etc. If two monitors in the same home have the same P value, only one will work correctly.
  • M (Operating mode): defines the monitor's behavior in the installation. The most common value for a standard installation is M=0. Different M values activate special modes (secondary monitor without call, open-only mode, etc.) that are rarely needed in a direct replacement.

How to obtain the correct N and P values

Before disassembling the Swing, access its configuration menu and note the programmed N and P values. These are the values you must enter in the Classe 100. If the Swing no longer works and you cannot access the menu, you will have to obtain the programming values from the outdoor panel or, as a last resort, perform a systematic search by testing values until you find the correct one.

How to configure N/P/M on the Classe 100

  • Classe 100A16E (audio only): configuration is done using physical configurators (jumpers) on the back of the monitor. The Tegui Coding Kit Green Configurators 2 Wires (BTicino 306065) (€13.04) includes the necessary jumpers if the originals are damaged or missing.
  • Classe 100V16B and 100V16E (with video): configuration is done from the installer's menu on the monitor itself. Usual access: hold down the menu button for 5 seconds with the monitor in standby. Check the installation manual of your specific model for the exact procedure.

For installations with more than 4 monitors or complex configurations, the BTicino 3501K Configuration Kit (€78.10) allows programming and verifying the entire installation from a single device.

Common errors in replacement

❌ Error 1: Installing the Classe 100 with factory settings

The Classe 100 leaves the factory with N=1 and P=0 (or similar values depending on the model). If the home had the Swing configured with N=3, the new monitor will not receive calls even if perfectly connected. Never install a monitor without first configuring its address.

❌ Error 2: Confusing the home address with the physical floor number

The N address programmed in the system does not have to match the building's floor number. In many installations, 3rd B may have N=7 because it was originally programmed that way. Always obtain the actual value from the existing installation; do not deduce it from the floor number.

❌ Error 3: Not verifying power supply compatibility with video

If the Swing was an audio-only terminal and a Classe 100 with a video screen is installed, the monitor's power consumption increases significantly. A power supply sized for audio may not support the additional video load, causing intermittent image failures or system restarts. Always check the power supply capacity before completing the installation.

❌ Error 4: Leaving the Classe 100 in incorrect M mode

Some installers, when exploring the configuration menu, accidentally modify the M parameter. An M value different from 0 can cause the monitor not to ring, not show video, or not allow door opening, even if N and P are correct. If the monitor does not work as expected after configuration, verify that M=0.

❌ Error 5: Not performing a factory reset before configuring

If the Classe 100 is a second-hand monitor or has been used in another installation, it may have residual N, P, or M values that interfere with the new configuration. Always perform a factory reset before programming a monitor that is not new.

❌ Error 6: Forgetting to configure the second monitor if there are two in the home

If the home had two Swing units and only one is replaced, the monitor that remains may have a subaddress P that conflicts with the new Classe 100 if both have P=0. Check the configuration of all the home's monitors, not just the one being replaced.

Final checks before handing over the installation

Functional checks

  • ☐ Call from the outdoor panel: press the button for the corresponding floor and check that the Classe 100 rings and shows an image in less than 3 seconds.
  • ☐ Door opening: from the monitor, press the opening button and verify that the panel relay activates the door opener.
  • ☐ Image quality: the image must be sharp and stable. An image with noise, flickering, or black and white may indicate a problem with the power supply or panel compatibility.
  • ☐ Two-way audio: verify that sound is heard correctly in both directions.
  • ☐ No crossed calls: if there are other floors in the building, verify that the call to the replaced floor does not activate monitors on other floors.

Installation checks

  • ☐ Mechanical fixing: the monitor must be firmly secured, without looseness that could cause vibrations or disconnections.
  • ☐ Terminals tightened: verify that the BUS cables are correctly inserted and tightened. A loose terminal is the most frequent cause of intermittent failures.
  • ☐ No exposed stripped wires: the cable insulation must reach the terminal to avoid short circuits on the BUS.
  • ☐ Documentation delivered to the customer: leave the Classe 100 user manual and write down on a paper the configured N/P/M values to facilitate future interventions.

If something does not work: diagnostic order

  1. Verify N, P, and M in the monitor menu
  2. Check that the BUS terminals are properly tightened
  3. Measure the voltage at the monitor terminals (should be 27-30 V DC at rest)
  4. Verify the power supply capacity
  5. Check that the outdoor panel works correctly with another reference monitor
